John W. Scott

Greenville – Mr. John W. Scott, 97, of 3 Hoke Smith Blvd., husband of Caroline Anderson Scott, died Tuesday, March 11, 2008 at Rolling Green Village in Greenville.

He was born in Bayonne, New Jersey to John Hendry and Gertrude Tucker Scott. He was raised in Roselle Park, New Jersey and graduated from Roselle Park High School in 1929. He received a Civil Engineering degree from Rutgers University in 1933, and later worked for the Union County, N. J. Mosquito Control Commission.

John entered active military service as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army in 1942. He was wounded at the Battle of Rhineland in the Normandy Campaign and awarded a Purple Heart for the bravery of his conduct at the time. He gained the rank of Captain while in active service and that of Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserves.

John married Caroline Milam Anderson of Honea Path, S.C. in 1943. After the war they settled in Waterbury, Vermont, where they raised their family. They moved to Honea Path in 1976 and to Greenville in 1999.

In 1945, John began work as a mosquito control engineer for the Vermont State Department of Agriculture, Division of Plant Pest Control. He served as division director from 1953 until his retirement in 1976.

John took an active interest in the communities in which he lived. He was an elder emeritus in the Honea Path Presbyterian Church and president of the Honea Path Lions Club in 1980-1981. He was a past master of the Winooski Masonic Lodge #49 in Waterbury, Vermont. He was a talented photographer, developing his own pictures, and a dedicated gardener who tended a large vegetable plot in Vermont for almost 30 years. He also served in several leadership positions in the Waterbury Congregational Church. John and his wife enjoyed traveling and they made many trips throughout the states and Canada as well as a trip to the British Isles.

He is survived by his wife Caroline and four daughters: Carol Cook of Philadephia, Pennsylvania; Jean Scott of Cambridge, Massachusetts; Marion Kasper of Milford, New Hampshire, Trudy Scott Sharafi of Bethesda, Maryland; and four grandchildren: Seth Kasper, Margaret Kasper, Laila Sharafi and Kian Sharafi. He was preceded in death by his sister Edna Scott (1991).

Memorial services will be held at 3 P.M. Friday at the Honea Path Presbyterian Church with Rev. James Moss officiating. The family will receive friends at the church immediately following the service.
