Honea Path – Beloved mother, Jewell Adeline Holland Shirley, 96, of 740 Hamby Road, died Tuesday March 7, 2023 at Callie and John Rainey Hospice House in Anderson, South Carolina. Jewell was the widow of James H. Shirley.
Born on November 16, 1926, she was the eighth of nine children, and the last surviving member of the Arthur Brown and Janie Margaret Ashley Holland family. She loved sports and played basketball at Honea Path High School. She later attended Newberry College. She was a devoted housewife who raised five children while also helping on the family farm. She was a dedicated member of Honea Path First Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years. She was also involved in the prison ministry and the homebound ministry of Honea Path First Baptist Church.
Mrs. Shirley is survived by her children, Gayle Burton, Jimmy Shirley (Frances), Margaret Brown (Bobby) and Pat Shirley (Valarie Sue); ten grandchildren, Jerri Lynn Gray, Jason Shirley, Reagan Watson, Kyle Shirley, Josh Brown, Daniel Brown, Brandon Shirley, Kevin Shirley, Kayla Brownlee, and Dakota Shirley; eighteen great-grandchildren; and special caregivers, Julie Vipperman and Mary Hawthorne.
Mrs. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Tony Shirley; three brothers; five sisters; and a great-granddaughter.
Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. Friday, March 10, 2023 at Honea Path First Baptist Church with Rev. Mike Moody, Rev. Josh Phillips, and Rev. Robert Beaver officiating. Burial will follow in Garden of Memories.
Pallbearers will be nephews. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Jewell Shirley Sunday School class.
The family of Mrs. Shirley would also like to thanks the staff of The Maples for the kindness and care she received while there.
The family is at the home of her daughter Margaret, 618 Barkers Creek Rd, Honea Path, and will receive friends from 1-2 P.M. Friday at the church prior to the service.
